Behind The Scenes – Mosferatwo – Part 1: The Name

The Inspiration Behind the Mosferatwo Pedal Naming

When I started working on this overdrive pedal, my goal was clear. I wanted to create a warm, dark-sounding overdrive that could take you into the depths of garage blues territory, from dirty grit to greasy fuzz. I’ve always been drawn to the sound of MOSFET technology because their natural and rich saturation feels incredibly organic, almost like an extension of the guitar’s tone.

A Playful Tradition of MOSFET Puns

As with most MOSFET-based pedals, I knew I wanted the name to include a “clever” pun involving “MOSFET.” Let’s face it, MOSFET pedals almost always come with a pun—it’s like an unspoken tradition. It reminds me of the kind of playful wordplay you might see in names for hairdresser salons: a little quirky, a little over-the-top, and guaranteed to make you smile (or groan, depending on your mood). After some brainstorming, I landed on Mosferatu, a name inspired by Nosferatu. It felt perfect! The dark, moody character of the name matched the pedal’s vibe. More importantly, it tied in neatly with the MOSFET theme using a cheesy pun.

A Setback in the Mosferatwo Pedal Naming Journey

I was thrilled—until I discovered that Alfonso Hermida of Hermida Audio (later Lovepedal) had already used Mosferatu for one of his pedals. Gutted doesn’t even begin to describe it. The excitement I had about the name fizzled out instantly.

However, in a lighthearted moment of self-deprecating humor, I stumbled upon the silly yet satisfying pun of Mosferatwo. It sounds the same but is spelled differently, and it gave me a good laugh. Just like that, the name stuck! I want to make it absolutely clear that my Mosferatwo and Hermida’s Mosferatu have nothing in common, including the circuit design. They are entirely separate creations.

The Meaning Behind the Controls

Now, let me tell you about some of the controls, because the names Heart and Bite obviously weren’t chosen at random. They reflect exactly what these controls do for your tone.

Heart: The Pulse of Your Sound

Just as your heart sets the rhythm of your body, the Heart control shapes the core of your sound by focusing on the low-end frequencies. Depending on the toggle switch position, it emphasizes either the deep bass or slightly higher lows, giving the sound a rich, pulsing foundation that lives up to its name. It truly is the heartbeat of your tone, adding warmth and depth to your playing.

Bite: The Sharpness and Edge

Imagine the sharpness and edge of a strong bite—that’s exactly what the Bite control brings to your tone. It focuses on the high-end frequencies, letting you add just the right amount of presence and clarity. With the toggle switch, you can choose between a smoother high-end boost or a sharper, more cutting edge. This feature makes it perfect for dialing in the grit and definition that makes your tone stand out.

Sculpting Your Unique Sound

Together, these controls allow you to sculpt your tone with precision. Whether you want subtle enhancements, snarling gritty overdrives, or full-on greasy fuzz, Mosferatwo provides the flexibility to shape your sound exactly as you envision it.
