What is Acromegaly?

Acromegaly occurs when a benign tumor (adenoma) in the pituitary gland causes excessive production of growth hormone. This condition results in abnormal growth of muscles, bones, and tissues.

Historians and medical experts have studied this condition for centuries. They believe it influenced figures in history and popular culture, such as biblical characters like Goliath and ancient rulers like Akhenaten. In modern times, André the Giant became one of the most recognized individuals with acromegaly. Additionally, some suggest that a 1940s wrestler with the condition inspired Shrek’s character design.

Although acromegaly is extremely rare, with only 3–4 new cases diagnosed per million people annually (depending on the region), the impact on those affected can be significant. In my case, doctors took over 20 years to diagnose it. If they had identified it earlier, I could have preserved my pituitary functions, avoided vision loss, and reduced the need for lifelong treatments. Raising awareness is essential, as early detection improves the quality of life for those affected.

I had the opportunity to share my story publicly. If you’re interested, you can watch this video to learn more about acromegaly.

The Story Behind the Tri-Hormonic Phalanx

In late 2023, I received a diagnosis of acromegaly. This rare condition transformed my life, pushing me to reevaluate my priorities. Although I decided to continue my corporate job, I also chose to pursue a lifelong dream: sharing my passion for creating high-quality guitar pedals. For years, I designed pedals for myself, family, and friends. However, this journey inspired me to make my work available to others.

The Tri-Hormonic Phalanx represents the beginning of this new chapter. Its name reflects its unique tri-band parallel distortion design and my battle with acromegaly. I named the three gain controls—IGF-1 (Low), GH (Mid), and ACTH (High)—after key hormones affected by this condition. IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) and GH (Growth Hormone) are closely tied to the overproduction that causes acromegaly. Meanwhile, ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone) highlights another critical pituitary function. These labels honor my journey and help raise awareness of this rare condition.

The Tri-Hormonic Phalanx blends my passion for music and design with a cause close to my heart. It’s more than just a pedal—it’s a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of pursuing dreams despite life’s challenges.
