A Balanced Beginning
When I first began designing the overdrive that would eventually become Shodhana, my goal was simple, but ambitious. I wanted something intuitive, elegant, and expressive. A two-knob overdrive that could deliver not just great tone, but tonal balance, a concept that kept resurfacing throughout the process.
The idea was to make a pedal that could move fluidly between clean and colored, from a flat, dynamic boost to a mid-forward voice that could slip naturally into a band mix. But I didn’t want to lock it into one style of overdrive. Instead, I wanted it to mimic the EQ curves and feel of all the classics, without actually copying any of them. The soft low-mid push of one, the upper-mid presence of another, the round low-end bloom of yet another. All accessible from one knob, with minimal controls and maximum feel.
The Search for a Name
I told Simi about the concept one evening, how the circuit was built around this idea of equilibrium, how turning one knob would shift not only the gain but also the voicing and energy of the pedal. Something that always maintained harmony between different tonal regions. “It’s like a yin-yang thing,” I told her. “Like push and pull, clean and dirty, transparent and colored.”
At the time, Simi had just started going back to her yoga classes, and without skipping a beat, she said:
“Do you know the word Shodhana?”
I didn’t.
So she explained.
What Shodhana Means
In Sanskrit, Shodhana means purification, but not in the sense of sterilizing or stripping away. It’s about restoring clarity, removing what clouds the system, whether physical, emotional, or energetic, so that everything flows in harmony again.
In yoga and Ayurveda, Shodhana is the act of balancing internal forces. Breathing practices like nadi shodhana alternate airflow between nostrils to balance left and right, masculine and feminine, active and receptive energies. It’s about integration, not elimination.
And in that moment, everything clicked.
That’s exactly what the pedal was doing.
Clarity, Not Cleansing
The name felt right. It wasn’t about “cleansing” your tone or “fixing” it. Shodhana doesn’t erase, it reveals. It brings clarity, structure, and intention to your sound while still letting it breathe. Whether you use it as a neutral boost or a harmonically rich drive, it always seeks that tonal middle path, never too scooped, never too nasal, always centered.
It was the perfect name for a pedal designed around balance.
So we kept it.
