The Birth of a God Mode MOSFET Drive
Some pedals begin with a sound. Mosphoros began with a challenge.
I wanted to build the ultimate all-MOSFET drive. Not yet another “MOSFET-based” pedal that just borrows the diodes for clipping and calls it a day, but one that truly lives and breathes MOSFET tone from input to output.
Most so-called MOSFET pedals use the transistors as junction diodes, a neat trick but hardly doing justice to what these little FETs can actually do. A few go further, maybe using a single MOSFET as a booster, or hiding inside a CMOS op-amp stuffed with tiny ones. But I wanted the whole family at the table: discrete MOSFET gain stages, MOSFET clipping, and a CMOS op-amp at the core. The full spectrum of what MOSFETs are capable of in terms of grain, texture, and harmonic bloom.
That’s how the circuit came first. Elegant or brutal, but always unapologetically MOSFET.
A Name Worthy of the Circuit
Once the sound was there, I needed a name.
And of course, it had to be a MOSFET pun.
But this time, not just any pun. This had to be the final boss of MOSFET puns. The god mode of overdrives. Something grand, ridiculous, and self-aware.
That’s when Simi, who had an early childhood obsession with Greek mythology, started throwing wild ideas around. One name instantly lit up the room: Phosphoros, “the bringer of light.”
It was perfect.
We twisted it, of course. Mosphoros: the bringer of MOSFET.
It sounded ancient, powerful, and hilariously over the top. Exactly our kind of humor.
The Bringer of MOSFET
From the first time I plugged it in, I knew the name fit. Mosphoros doesn’t behave like other drives. It doesn’t mask your tone: it illuminates it. Every note carries harmonic light, the kind that makes you play longer than you meant to.
It’s smooth, fluid, and effortless, yet capable of exploding into rich, dimensional drive when pushed. It feels alive under the fingers, the way a well-biased tube stage should, except this time it’s pure MOSFET power, refined by precision op-amp architecture.
So yes, it’s a joke. But like all our best jokes, it’s also the truth.
