A Circuit Built on Balance
From the very start, Shodhana was built around a single guiding idea: balance. Not only in tone, but also in architecture, function, and feel. It deliberately lives in the space between transparency and character, and between simplicity and depth, all without leaning on complex tone stacks or graphic EQs.
Instead, the entire circuit centers around the Drive knob. This single control does two things at once: it sets the gain of the overdrive stage while smoothly blending a transparent MOSFET boost that runs in parallel. At its lowest setting, the boost dominates, delivering a clean, fast response with rich harmonics and zero coloration. Gradually turning the knob introduces the overdrive, adding grit, midrange focus, and increasing harmonic density along the way.
As the Drive climbs higher, the sound becomes more confident and sculpted. At this point, the boost fully steps aside, leaving a punchy, articulate overdrive that naturally cuts through the mix. Most importantly, it does so exactly where it counts, preserving clarity, presence, and note definition even as the gain increases.

A Transparent Boost Meets a Mid-Focused Voice

On the transparent side, the circuit is voiced for clarity and immediacy. It preserves the full frequency range of your guitar while adding just enough edge to give chords a crisp snap and single notes real bite. It never feels sterile. Instead, it stays open, responsive, and very much alive.
Meanwhile, the overdrive path tells a different story. It evolves as you turn the Drive, starting out smooth and wide before gradually tightening and focusing. With each increase, the sound gains push, energy, and a sense of urgency. This transformation comes from three carefully placed and finely tuned frequency boosts. One lives in the lower mids to bring warmth and body, while two sit slightly higher to add presence and punch. Together, they shape the harmonic response in a natural, musical way, all without relying on a traditional EQ knob.

Precision Through Math
Shodhana doesn’t just sound balanced. It’s built that way from the ground up. Throughout the circuit, the high-pass and low-pass filtering follows binary multiples, each one carefully shaped to roll off gently at musically meaningful frequencies.
However, this mathematical symmetry is more than a technical detail. It reinforces the core philosophy of the pedal: balance achieved through intention, not flatness. By placing these filter points with purpose, the circuit prevents any single frequency from taking over. As a result, the tone stays grounded, natural, and stable, even when you push it hard.
Innovative by Design, Not by Accident
While many overdrives build on familiar blueprints, Shodhana starts from its own foundation. The entire topology was custom built to offer a seamless transition between two gain characters, without needing additional switches, toggle options, or tone stacks.
The op-amps used in the signal path were chosen for two distinct qualities: clarity under load and warmth in breakup. They stay clean and full at low gain, then react with smooth dynamics when pushed, adding texture without harshness, and character without chaos.
