A Console Mindset in a Pedal Format

Regista looks simple at first glance, yet the internal architecture follows the logic of a recording console rather than a typical guitar pedal. Every stage of the circuit works toward the same purpose. The goal is to give the player precise and musical control of the mids, similar to shaping a track on an Amek Mozart. This mindset guides every design decision and allows the pedal to behave with the confidence of a studio tool while remaining intuitive for guitarists.

A Clean and Open Starting Point

The signal begins with a clean and stable input stage. This opening step prepares the guitar in the same way a console preamp prepares a recording. By keeping the foundation open and responsive, the circuit ensures that the midrange section can work with clarity and intention. Nothing compresses or colors the tone at this stage, which allows the pedal to react with accuracy in the later stages.

Drive, Designed for Musical Intention

After the input stage, the signal enters a controlled Drive block that sets the musical behavior of the entire pedal. Rather than adding distortion, this Drive provides the energy necessary for the midrange engine to respond with clarity and expression. At noon, the output remains completely flat, matching unity and keeping the sound transparent. Turning the Drive control all the way up delivers roughly 18 dB of focused boost. At the lowest setting it cuts by 18 dB at the selected frequency.

18 dB is a number worth pausing on. Most EQ pedals on the market offer between 6 and 12 dB of boost or cut per band. Regista doubles that range. The headroom is engineered to handle quite some chugs, which means the boost stays accurate and musical at every setting, from a whisper of presence to a commanding forward push that reshapes the entire character of the guitar.

Instead of overwhelming the guitar, the Drive behaves the way a console’s mid band behaves when it is driven with intention. Subtle warmth appears. Harmonics gain presence. The tone grows more confident without losing accuracy. Zone – A Frequency Sweep Tuned to Human Hearing

The Zone sweep forms the core of Regista. In many pedals the sweep moves in mathematically spaced steps, which ignore how people actually hear sound. Human hearing responds logarithmically, which means the distance between frequencies grows or shrinks according to perception rather than arithmetic. For example, the step from 0 to 500 Hz feels different from the step between 500 and 1000 Hz, even though the numbers might imply symmetry. That is why Amek, SSL, Trident, Neve, and others cluster their mid controls around 400 to 650 Hz.

To reflect this natural perception, the central sweep is tuned at 1 kHz. Although this value is not the mathematical midpoint of the range, it sits in the perceptual center where the ear is most sensitive to musical detail. Many respected consoles, including the Amek Mozart, place one of their key mid bands in this region. Regista follows the same approach, so the sweep behaves intuitively and always feels musical.

The sweep covers 100 Hz at the lowest setting through to 10 kHz at the highest, with 1 kHz at noon. That is a range of more than six and a half octaves across the musical range of the instrument, a span that reaches from the fundamental body of a guitar’s low strings all the way through bite, presence, and upper harmonic detail. No position in that range is wasted. Every point of the sweep corresponds to something real and musically meaningful.

How Zone Actually Works

Zone does not move a single filter. It simultaneously steers two linked integrators that form the core of the frequency engine. One sets the center frequency. The other tracks it. Both move together because they are ganged on the same physical pot, which is why the control feels so even and responsive across its full travel. The tracking is not approximate, it is exact by design. This is the same architectural approach used in professional studio parametric equalizers. The bell stays perfectly centered at every position because both integrators are always in agreement, regardless of where Drive or Shape are set.

Precision Through a Single Logical and Musical Sweep

The Zone control moves through the musical middle as one continuous sweep. It treats the midrange as a single, coherent space that follows how the ear naturally explores sound, allowing the guitar to be placed with intention rather than calculation.

At lower positions, the focus sits in the body of the sound, reinforcing warmth, mass, and physical presence. As the control moves upward, the character opens into clarity and definition, where the guitar gains a more vocal and expressive quality. Further along, the emphasis shifts toward bite and presence, helping notes speak clearly and carry through a mix without turning sharp or aggressive.

Because the sweep is centered around a perceptual anchor rather than a technical midpoint, every movement feels even and predictable. The transition from one character to the next happens smoothly, so the sound evolves naturally as the control moves. Small movements carry meaning, and each position offers a distinct musical balance shaped by how body, clarity, and presence are actually perceived.

The Shape Control That Defines Expression

Below the sweep sits the Shape control, which determines how broad or narrow the shaping becomes. A wide Shape produces smooth and natural curves that behave like a gentle console EQ. Narrowing the Shape focuses the effect into a more defined and articulate band. Harmonics separate more clearly. Resonances become easier to identify. In practice, this allows the player to sculpt tone with the kind of precision engineers rely on when using parametric mids in the studio.

The Shape network interacts directly with the sweep circuit before rejoining the main path. Because these sections communicate with each other, the midrange feels dynamic rather than static. The shaping does not only raise a frequency. It shifts the relationship between fundamentals and harmonics, which creates a sense of movement inside the sound.

Shape controls Q by varying how much of the filter’s own output feeds back into its input. A wide Shape means less feedback, so the filter affects a broad band of frequencies. A narrow Shape means heavier feedback, which focuses the filter into a tight, precise band. This is exactly how parametric bandwidth works on a large-format console, and it is why Shape feels musical at every setting rather than clinical.

Shape Ranges Built for Real-World Use

The Shape control spans a Q range from almost flat to surgical precision. At wider settings, the shaping blends smoothly into the sound, enhancing weight and cohesion, behaving like the broad mid curves that give recordings their sense of fullness and warmth. At narrower settings, the effect becomes surgical, separating harmonics, identifying resonances, placing the guitar in the mix with the precision of a studio engineer who knows exactly which frequency to move and by how much. The balanced midpoint feels immediately musical and is where most players will spend most of their time.

The wide Q range of Regista is the difference between a broad, gentle presence lift and a tight, focused resonance pull, and every point between those extremes is continuously available without steps, presets, or compromises.

What Fully Parametric Actually Means

Most pedals described as parametric are semi-parametric. They give you a frequency sweep and a gain control, but the bandwidth, the Q, is either fixed or switched between a handful of preset positions. That is a useful and musical tool, but it is not what parametric means.

A true parametric equalizer gives you continuous, independent control over all three variables simultaneously: frequency, gain, and bandwidth. The concept was defined by George Massenburg in his landmark 1972 AES paper, and it became the foundation of virtually every serious mixing console EQ that followed. Regista implements exactly that. Zone sweeps frequency continuously across more than six and a half octaves across the full tonal spectrum. Drive sets gain continuously across a 36 dB range. Shape controls Q continuously from wide to surgical. All three are independent, continuously variable and available at the same time. That is the definition of a fully parametric equalizer, and it is what the Amek Mozart MZ15-RN MF section was built to deliver.

Musical Motion Inside the Midrange

Certain combinations of Zone, Shape, and Drive produce a noticeable sense of motion. Chords bloom differently. Attacks gain definition or soften slightly. Harmonics shift their weight as the controls interact. This behavior reflects the real-time experience of sweeping a parametric mid on a large-format console. Engineers know this sensation well. Regista brings that same expressive movement to a pedalboard, which makes the control feel alive under the player’s hands.

Phase Coherence

Most guitar EQ pedals introduce asymmetric phase shift around the frequencies they boost or cut. In simpler designs, this creates a smearing of transients and a muddiness that experienced players often describe as the EQ affecting more than it should, or adding a quality they cannot quite name but cannot ignore. The sound changes in ways beyond the intended boost or cut, and the result rarely sounds exactly like what the engineer or player had in mind.

Regista uses a state-variable filter architecture, the same class of circuit found in professional studio equipment, which produces a phase-coherent, symmetrical response around the center frequency. The phase behavior is controlled and balanced at every Zone and Shape setting. The circuit shapes only what you ask it to shape. Everything outside the selected band remains undisturbed.

A Stable and Confident Output Stage

After the shaping is complete, the circuit routes the signal into a controlled output stage. This final section stabilises the tone and ensures it remains balanced even when the settings become extreme. The Level control then gives the player a post-EQ recovery gain of up to 10 dB, on top of whatever Drive has already applied to the selected frequency band.

That combination matters. It means that carving deeply into the mids, pulling back a resonance, tightening a muddy frequency, narrowing the Q to isolate a specific harmonic, never has to cost you presence or perceived volume. Level brings everything back to where it needs to be, and then further if the moment calls for it. On a console, the trim after the EQ section exists for exactly this reason. Regista puts that same behavior on a pedalboard.
